Case Studies

Empowering Sales through Unified Compliance and Reporting

Situation:

When I joined the organization, the licensing and OSHA records were fragmented and outdated. The sales team lacked accurate visibility into licensing status, and there was inconsistency in how records were maintained across departments.

Task:

My objective was to overhaul the record-keeping system, ensuring that all licensing and OSHA records were accurate, unified, and compliant with regulatory standards, while also empowering the sales team with the information they needed for effective bidding and decision-making.

Action:

I began by centralizing all licensing records and OSHA documentation into a single, unified system. This involved meticulous updates and the removal of redundant copies, ensuring that all records were accurate and up-to-date. I also standardized the reporting formats and integrated a streamlined process for the sales team to access real-time licensing information.

Additionally, I ensured compliance with OSHA's recordkeeping standards and relevant privacy regulations by removing personally identifiable information from the records shared with non-essential personnel and regulatory bodies.

Result:

  • 40% improvement in reporting accuracy, delivering more reliable and actionable data
  • Seamless, unified system that empowered the sales team with consistent, trustworthy insights
  • Enhanced efficiency and bidding accuracy across sales operations
  • Improved compliance and reduced operational risk, strengthening overall governance and control
Centralized Licensing and Risk Management System

Situation:

Our organization needed a unified, audit-ready licensing and risk function to support multi-state operations and ensure seamless market entry into regulated markets.

Task:

The task was to build and centralize the licensing and risk management infrastructure, streamline workflows, and provide executive-level reporting to maintain compliance and decision-making speed.

Action:

I led the creation of a centralized license management and filing system that covered all business and trade categories. I partnered with brokers to streamline general liability, property damage, workers’ comp, and auto claims workflows. I also administered OCIP/CCIP enrollments to ensure contract compliance and delivered daily OSHA and claims performance reports to the executive team.

Results:

  • Centralized system enabled uninterrupted expansion into new markets
  • Improved accuracy and retrievability of records, supporting operational clarity
  • Lowered the company’s experience modification rate (EMR), reducing risk exposure
  • Strengthened compliance posture and faster decision-making through daily executive reporting
Injury Tracking and Safety Analytics System

Situation:

I inherited a fragmented and outdated injury tracking system at our organization’s safety department. The existing process lacked clarity and was not providing the executive team with the necessary safety analytics.

Task:

My task was to revamp the injury tracking and safety reporting system to ensure that safety data was accurately tracked, properly organized, and easily accessible to executive leadership.

Action:

I developed a structured, centralized injury tracking system and integrated it with our Velocity EHS platform. By doing so, I enabled daily monitoring and reporting of safety data, including the number of injuries, OSHA recordables, and injury locations. I worked closely with a colleague to customize the analytics and ensured that the data could be easily interpreted by executives.

Result:

  • Clear, actionable safety analytics enabling informed, proactive leadership decisions
  • Improved accuracy in injury reporting, increasing data reliability
  • Enhanced visibility into safety trends, supporting early risk identification
  • Stronger overall safety culture across the organization
Development and Accreditation of Continuing Education Program

Situation:

Holmes Murphy required a comprehensive, fully accredited continuing education program for its construction clients. This program needed to meet rigorous industry standards, achieve and maintain accreditation, and remain current with evolving requirements.

Task:

As the sole architect of the program, I was tasked with developing the entire continuing education infrastructure. This included designing assessments, learning materials, and grading rubrics, as well as establishing policies, procedures, and archiving systems to ensure compliance and longevity.

Action:

I independently created a 360-degree continuing education program that covered all facets of learning and assessment. This involved conducting a needs analysis, developing learning design documents, and creating procedural documents that outlined instructor responsibilities. I also developed the grading rubrics, the archiving system for compliance of learner records, and the transcript system for distribution of learner records. Beyond the instructional design, I was responsible for the program’s marketing efforts, including crafting all marketing emails and selecting imagery to promote webinars.

Result:

  • Achieved and maintained IACET accreditation, ranking in the top 5% of accredited programs
  • Recognized for excellence and adherence to the highest standards
  • Increased enrollment and sustained participation driven by targeted marketing efforts
  • Strengthened the company’s reputation as a leader in construction industry continuing education
Safety Leadership Academy for Construction Clients

Situation:

Holmes Murphy needed a scalable solution to develop emerging safety leaders within its construction client base. The goal was to align training with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)’s Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification requirements while addressing real-world field challenges.

Task:

As the program lead, I was responsible for designing and managing a 12-month Safety Leadership Academy. This involved creating a curriculum that balanced practical safety leadership skills with disciplined CHST exam readiness, as well as coordinating a team of instructors and subject matter experts.

Action:

  • Co-architected a 12-month OSHA-aligned curriculum with subject matter experts, structured into 12 core modules
  • Designed each module with live monthly discussions, structured study materials, and BCSP-aligned practice exams
  • Led and standardized a team of eight instructors, ensuring consistent content quality and coaching methods
  • Built strong accountability mechanisms through individual preparation plans and continuous feedback loops

Real-Time Delegate Data Advantage

Situation:

In 2010, during the DFL State Convention in Duluth, the campaign operated in a highly competitive, multi-round delegate environment where accurate, real-time delegate counts were critical to strategic decision-making.

Task:

The objective was to design and implement a system capable of capturing live delegate data from the convention floor and delivering reliable intelligence to campaign leadership and candidates after each round of voting.

Action:

I architected and deployed a secure VPN-enabled data collection workflow that allowed operatives on the convention floor to submit real-time delegate counts. The data was centralized, structured, and processed using Microsoft Access, enabling rapid aggregation, validation, and reporting. This intelligence was continuously communicated to campaign leadership, providing clear visibility into both our delegate strength and competitor positioning throughout the convention.

Result:

  • Eliminated uncertainty around delegate math, enabling informed, real-time strategic decisions
  • Empowered campaign leadership to dynamically adjust strategy using verified, trusted data
  • Created a significant competitive advantage through faster, more accurate decision-making
  • Served as an early precursor to modern real-time dashboards and decision intelligence systems

Outside the Office

Outside the office, Robert is every bit the lifelong creative and community mentor. He started his artistic journey at seven, mastering a 35mm camera and a darkroom under his father’s guidance. Today, that foundation has evolved into a robust command of digital media, from Adobe Creative Suite to professional video editing. Whether it’s a black-and-white photograph or a Bob Ross-inspired landscape, Robert brings a timeless creative spirit into the modern age.

But creativity is just one part of his story. Robert is also deeply dedicated to mentorship and community impact. As a youth soccer coach, he’s helped shape young players’ confidence and love for the game, and as a university instructor, he’s shared his knowledge of social media and digital marketing to inspire others.

In his personal life, Robert is all about family and community. He finds joy in the garden—a love inherited from his mother—and in coaching his daughter’s team, living out his values of giving back. For Robert, a fulfilling life is one that balances professional excellence with a personal commitment to creativity, teaching, and community spirit.
